Where you can legally consume in Puerto Rico
Being authorized to buy does not mean you can consume anywhere. Where you cannot, and why federal land matters more than visitors expect.
Holding an authorization lets you buy and possess medical cannabis. It does not let you consume it anywhere you like.
Where you cannot consume
- In public. Consumption on roads, plazas, and public beaches is not permitted.
- On federal land. This catches visitors out: El Yunque is a national forest — federal jurisdiction, where cannabis remains entirely illegal. The same goes for other federal property.
- At airports or on flights, including between Puerto Rico and the mainland.
- While driving. Driving under the influence is a criminal offense.
Lodging
Hotels, Airbnbs, and guesthouses set their own rules, and many prohibit indoor smoking. Ask before you book rather than assuming. Edibles and tinctures tend to cause fewer problems than smoking.
The practical version
Consume at a private residence with the owner's permission. Buy only what you'll use during the trip: you cannot legally take it home, and disposing of it properly before you fly is on you.
