Visiting Puerto Rico?

You can buy cannabis here legally — but only through the medical programme. There is no adult-use market on the island. Here is exactly how it works.

Can you buy here?

Three questions. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Question 1 of 3

Are you 21 or older?

The two legal routes

Already hold a medical card?

Puerto Rico honors photo-bearing medical cards from other US jurisdictions under reciprocity. Call ahead — verification and product limits vary by dispensary.

How reciprocity works

No card yet?

A Puerto Rico-licensed physician can evaluate you and register you as a non-resident patient. Many consult by telehealth, so you can start before you land.

The rules that catch visitors out

  • You must be 21 or older and carry government-issued photo ID.
  • Cannabis is illegal on federal land — El Yunque is a national forest — and you cannot take it on a flight.
  • Public consumption is not permitted. Hotels set their own rules; ask before you book.
Confirm current requirements with the Medical Cannabis Regulatory Board
