What to expect on your first dispensary visit

What to bring, how the visit works, and what to ask if this is your first time buying medical cannabis.

If you've never walked into a dispensary, the process is simpler than it looks.

What to bring

  • Your valid patient card
  • Photo ID that matches it
  • A payment method. Many dispensaries are largely cash-based because of federal banking restrictions; check ahead or look for one with an ATM.

How the visit works

  1. Check-in. You show your card and ID before entering the sales floor.
  2. Consultation. A staff member walks you through products, potency, and consumption methods.
  3. Selection. You can browse the menu ahead of time on the dispensary's profile here.
  4. Purchase. It's recorded against your 30-day supply limit.

What to ask

  • What THC-to-CBD ratio suits what I'm treating?
  • How long until it takes effect, and how long does it last?
  • How should I start if I've never consumed before?
  • Do you offer a new-patient discount?

One tip

Start with the lowest available dose and wait. With edibles, full effects can take two hours or more to arrive.
