How to get your medical cannabis card in Puerto Rico
The process for Puerto Rico residents: evaluation by an authorized physician, registration with the Board, and your patient card.
To buy medical cannabis in Puerto Rico you need to be registered as a patient with the Medical Cannabis Regulatory Board.
Step 1 — Medical evaluation
A physician authorized by the Board has to evaluate you and determine whether your condition qualifies. Not every physician can issue the recommendation — they must be registered to do so. Find one in our directory.
Step 2 — Application
With the recommendation, your application goes to the Board's registry. The physician or clinic normally walks you through this step.
Step 3 — Your card
Once approved, you receive your patient card. The full process has been reported to take several weeks; start early if your treatment depends on it.
Step 4 — Buying
With a valid card and ID, you can buy at any licensed dispensary.
Worth knowing
- Registered patients may possess up to a 30-day supply.
- You must be 21 or older, except for authorized minor patients with a guardian.
- Keep a copy of your card; you'll need it on every visit.
Confirm current requirements, fees, and timelines directly with the Board before starting.
