How to renew your medical cannabis card
Your patient card expires. When to start the renewal, and what keeps your access from lapsing.
Patient cards in Puerto Rico carry an expiration date. Once it lapses you cannot buy until you renew — so when you start matters.
Start early
Don't wait for the expiration date. Processing times vary, and a late renewal means weeks without legal access. Starting a month or more ahead is the safe move.
What you need
- A follow-up evaluation with an authorized physician
- Your current card
- Valid photo ID
- The applicable renewal payment
If your details changed
If you've moved or changed your name, update that during renewal. ID that doesn't match your card causes problems at the dispensary.
While you wait
An expired card doesn't work, even with a renewal in progress. Plan your supply accordingly.
Renewal requirements and fees can change. Confirm the current ones with the Board.
